The ReStore Art Challenge!

Guidelines for the ReStore Art Challenge

City Art Center in Partnership with Habitat for Humanity in Delaware, Ohio

Where: City Art Center, 22 E. Winter Street, Delaware, Ohio
When: April 6 – 28, 2012; Opening Reception: First Friday, April 6

Details:
The premise for the exhibition is to highlight sustainable practices in art making as well as to promote the efforts of the Habitat for Humanity in Delaware County. Eight artists/artist groups will be selected from the Central Ohio region. The selected artists will demonstrate their ability to repurpose materials to created unique works of art with images of their past works as well as a submitted artist statement. The selected artists will be awarded a $50 voucher from the Delaware Restore to obtain materials to be used in 1-3 new works created specifically for the ReStore Art Exhibition. Note: The Delaware ReStore is the only participating ReStore.

The Exhibition will be juried. Prize amounts as follows:
Best of Show: $250
First Place: $100
A “People’s Choice” award will be determined by votes from City Art Center visitors and that amount will be based on visitor donations.

The artwork must be for sale; the proceeds will be given as follows:
25% for Habitat for Humanity, Delaware County
25% for City Art Center
50% for the artist

The perimeters for the artists to work with as far as creating the artwork are:

85% of the artwork should be constructed from materials obtained at the ReStore or repurposed materials.
There is no limit on size or dimension (2D or 3D).
The work should be developed with high level of craftsmanship and concept is significant.
Collaborations or “Teams” are welcome and encouraged.
The works need to be completed and installed for the April 6 Opening Reception at the City Art Center.
The tools to complete the work are completely the responsibility of the individual artists.
The installation is also the responsibility of the artists.
The artwork should be a response to the theme of the exhibition

The theme of the exhibition is Shelter. Shelter is a broad term that can be interpreted in many ways. We think of a home as a shelter, but also it can be a cover that protects one from danger or weather, or even perhaps a haven. The word “shelter” is a jumping off point for the creative process in this project.

Selected artists will be notified by Monday, March 5 and will have ONE MONTH to complete the work for the ReStore Art Show which opens Friday, April 6, 2012.

This show promises to be fascinating to Delaware Residents, History Buffs, Movie Fanatics, Ghost-Hunters, and everyone in between!

Strand Theater Manager and Archivist, Kara Long along with Local Photographer, Steve Leibrand take us on an expedition of the shadows and hidden places within the Strand Theater that you don't get with a movie ticket.

Photographer Steve Leibrand and Strand Theatre Archivist KaraLong have combined their talents to bring you the first ever photographicexpedition of hidden and forgotten treasures of the Historic Strand Theatre.They will show you places behind the screen that have been dark for many years.

Join them for an Opening Night Galleryreception on Friday, March 2, 2012, 6:00-9:00p.m, at the City Art Centerlocated two doors down from the Strand Theatre. Artwork will be for sale with proceedsbenefiting both Non-Profits, Strand Theatre and City Art Center.

ReStore Art

April 6 - 28, 2012

The City Art Center is teaming up with another local non-profit organization, Habitat for Humanity Delaware to present a display of sustainable art created by area artists.

The selected artists will be challenged to make work using approximately 90% of their materials obtained from the ReStore in Delaware! Information about how to participate will be posted very soon, so stay tuned! This will be a juried exhibition with a cash prize!

Artwork will be for sale, proceeds will be divided between the Artists, Habitat for Humanity Delaware, and City Art Center!

Opening Reception from 6-9pm, First Friday, April 6, 2012

Winners will be announced at 7:30pm at the Opening Reception!

In conjunction with this exhibit: Red Panty Crafts will be sponsoring a Fashion Runway Show during the month of April at the CAC, displaying hand-crafted art-as-clothing made from repurposed digs. Don't miss this Event! More info soon!

The Start of a New Year Full of Creativity!

2012, The Year of the Art Dragon...well for Delaware, its safe to say that the arts will be everywhere you turn if we can help it in the upcoming year!!!

The City Art Center is collaborating with many of the area organizations in creative projects that will hopefully bring creativity into the foreground for everyone.

For example, we are working with the Strand Theater, Arts Castle, and Habitat for Humanity with some arts projects coming up soon! The CAC is so excited to be working along some of the best organizations around to better serve the community!

This First Friday, swing by from 6-9 pm to check out the vibrant paintings of local artist Dianne Almendinger!!!!

Also, The Arts Castle will be our guest this evening with information about what's going on these next few months at the other end of Winter Street! You can even register for any of the fabulous Arts Castle classes at the CAC tonight!

We have a very interesting exhibit coming up in February that may involve YOU! We'll have some information about that as well.

We hope to see you out tonight in Downtown Delaware for First Friday!!! Don't forget to head down Winter Street and pay us a visit!!! We are right next door to the Central Ohio Symphony Orchestra and 2 doors down from the historic, sustainable, non-profit Strand Theater!

The City Art Center was bursting with energy last Friday Night at our Very First Birthday Bash!

Super Huge Thanks to:
Dianne Almendinger, a Delaware Artist, for sharing her vibrant and creatively experimental paintings. This show will run through the end of the year.
OpenheartCreatures, a Columbus-Based Body Puppet Performance Troupe for making a very special appearance at the CAC! They flipped our lids and tickled our imaginations!
Electronic Mentality, the Delaware Dub-step Duo, full of talent - those guys! mixing it up in the back of the art center with some seriously danceable music.
Cindy Patrick, of Enticing Icings, for the delicious birthday cakes that she generously donated for our very first Birthday!

Also thanks to Gregg Snouffer for sharing his laser lights, which created a fun atmosphere at the party and Jonna & Brian Stumpo for not only their edible and drinkable donations, but also for helping so much! To all of the volunteers that show up each month & put in the hours to make this all happen: YOU ARE THE BEST!!!!! We wouldn't be as successful without our community that attend our events every month, so thanks for your encouragement and support as well!

The Wake (or After You've Gone)

We're getting excited for our newest exhibition at the City Art Center which Opens This Friday at 6pm!
For November, the CAC is hosting artist: Jenny Fine as she shares her darkly comedic yet lovely photographs in combination with a performative installation.
"Performative Installation?" you ask. Well, Jenny is transforming our gallery into a set for a performance that coincides with the narrative subject matter within her photographs. Her work is based on personal experiences with her family in rural Alabama. Jenny Fine translates her memories and family histories into fantastic imagery that includes pigs coming to life as stand-ins for the people that make up these stories.
Years ago, her family raised pigs on the farm, but tragically had to euthanize them all in one day due to a disease outbreak. In the Fine family, this was known as "The Saddest Day" and is the springboard for this work.

From The Saddest Day Series

The performance is a looping portrayal of a wake after the loss of a family member. The cast is "Flat Granny", a cardboard cut-out of Jenny's grandmother and a slew of pig characters.
Please stop in at any time this Friday, November 4 from 6-9pm to experience this unique creation! The performance is Friday only, however the set, props, and photographs will continue to be on display until Saturday, November 26, 2011. Jenny Fine will be present at the opening reception and she will return to give an informal artist talk on Friday, November 18 at 7pm. These events are free and open to the public. We encourage you to join us in conversation surrounding this work. As always at the CAC, we hope to provide the community with engaging art experiences and hope that you enjoy this incredible art work!!!

What Are YOU Afraid of?

Things have been moving along at the City Art Center as we are always striving to exhibit challenging and thought-provoking art in the City of Delaware! We are planning out the next several months and hope that you will continue to stop in to see what's going on. Also, come by and give us some feedback as well as sign up to get involved! We can use your help and support! Our Gallery Hours are currently: Fridays 4-7pm & Saturdays 2-7pm.

Our current exhibition is "What Are You Afraid Of?" and is running through the end of the month. We had a great turn out last week at First Friday! So many people contributed to our "What Are You Afraid Of? Wall as you can see below! Some really interesting fears!

The Saddest Day, number 5.

Artist Statement: Jenny Fine
I photograph my family. Through the lens of my camera, the landscape of the family farm and the interiors of our homes become a stage on which our costumed bodies perform tenderness. Over time, the camera has become a tool for facilitating intimacy between my family and me; a way of expressing the things that feel difficult in life but, through the camera, are made possible. The reoccurring themes in my work explore the familial narratives told to me during my life in rural Alabama. The resulting images function as an emotional narrative about memory, family, loss and the often difficult and complex relationships that surround love. Through the use of contemporary and historical photographic processes, moving image, and installation, I create images and environments inspired by my family’s narratives.

The Artist will be presenting a performance the night of the Opening Reception, First Friday, November 4, 2011, from 6-9pm.

We are now accepting volunteers for that performance. If you are interested, please email Jessi Walker at: artcompartment@gmail.com
To be eligible for consideration as a performer, you will need to be available both evenings:Thursday, Nov. 3 as well as Fri. Nov. 4., we will need to get your clothing size in order to arrange for a costume, and note that performers will be wearing masks. We could also use help assisting the performance (sound, props, etc).

We are also very excited to host Delaware Artist, Diane Almendinger with her intensely beautiful paintings for our One-Year Anniversary Exhibition!
Mark your calendars for the First Friday in December, this is the 2nd day of the month. We are lining up some festive performers as well to celebrate our first birthday!

Our Life Drawing Sessions are back! If you are interested in participating in a self-guided, life drawing session, we meet at the CAC on Tuesday Evenings at 7 pm. The model is provided, however you will need to bring your own mark-making supplies. No registration is needed, it is $8 to drop-in per 2+ hour session. If you are interested in modeling, let us know, we can always use new models.

Fall Forward

Drawing Interest: A Survey of Drawings, Doodles, and Sketches
Quite the project! We were so excited to receive so many submissions from the community and beyond!!! There were submissions from not only Delaware, but Columbus, Normal, IL, and even Australia!! Many of the doodles & drawings came from local students: elementary through college! Artists and non-artists alike willingly contributed as well! We are so glad to have this level of creative participation from the community!
The aspect of the show that I personally enjoyed most was the accumulation of artifacts, not just drawings. There was a sense that each submission was an object that corresponded with a moment in each artist's world, it seemed to be a collection of twinklings of personal histories.
Stay tuned as we plan to host another show next year with a similar concept of community involvement. The submissions will be available this Saturday 2-7pm for pick up. The entries that were shipped will be returned in the next week.

It was impossible to stop discovering new amazing details throughout the show each time one looked! The images below are some examples of work that received many comments during our gallery hours. There was so much praise for all of the talent in the show and in our community!

This was a collaboration between father and son artists, combining various characters - We Love It!!!

This weekend (9/30 & 10/1), we are taking time to plan out the next year as well as installing our next big show!! The doors will be open, however, we are in-between shows. You are welcome to stop by and pick up your drawings or even witness the behind the scenes at the CAC. We always welcome volunteers and if you have a project, workshop, or show idea, we would love for you to share it!

Our next show: What Are You Afraid Of?
will be opening next Friday October 7 from 6-9pm.
This exhibition will be featuring a group of artists that work in subject matter that explores the darker side of life and fantasy. The overall theme of the show is Fear! and it might be more of an experience than you expect!!!

We will also be opening our doors on Halloween for a Trick or Treat Special Event of a "Mad Artist Labratory!" in which everyone from the community is invited to tour our Spooked-Up Art Center for a real treat!
Ever wanted to create a Haunted House? We invite YOU to help out on Saturdays in October (2-7pm) in building and painting the sets and decorations for this event. We need your creative input, time, and/or skills to pull this off. We are also accepting donations of materials that can be used for our "Mad Artist Labratory"

Summer Reflections

Wow, did summer fly by or what? We had some great energy stirring in the CAC this summer, some really fun and interesting exhibits that we are quite proud of!!!

We kicked off the summer in June with our Ground Works Exhibition showcasing many of the talented artists that are involved with the CAC.

In July, we mixed it up a little with another group exhibition: Hello Science featuring artists that demonstrate their "conversations" with science in their work. We had a remarkable gallery talk surrounding that show with all of the artists present and a full house. It was great to see that kind of active participation from the community!

Speaking of community being engaged, we had record turn-out for visitors in the month of August with A History of Everything and Nothing by Columbus artist Susan Li O'Connor! The cascading paper curtain and organic tunnel structure sparked the curiosity of people by the dozens! It was fabulous to see the responses the site specific installation of nearly 4 thousand paper mailers (donated by Columbus College of Art & Design) transforming our gallery space! The conversations that took place in the midst of this exhibition were inspiring!

We've had so many questions about how this work was created and just as many about how it was removed! So to satisfy your curiosity, we're attaching some photos of the de-install process as well!!

Special Thanks to Susan, who not only shared her creative ingenuity with the CAC and our community, but worked so hard to get this show installed in a small window of time(in the intense heat!)!!! Thanks to all of the volunteers that helped her out as well!

During the month of August, we began collecting material for our September show: Drawing Interest. This was a wide open look at Drawings, Doodles, and Sketches from a diverse range of individuals from the area. It was so exciting to see the different drawings coming in to the art center to be shared for this exciting show. We received drawings and doodles of all kinds, from artists' renderings to kids' drawings and doodles on the edges of notes, not to mention many submissions from Ohio Wesleyan University students. There are all sorts of creative experiments and expressions, this is a true community display of talent and participation. Drawing Interest is open through this weekend, so today and tomorrow are your final chances to see this exhibition! (Gallery Hours: Fri. 4-7pm & Sat. 2-7pm) (Photos to come soon)

Thanks to the volunteers from OWU this month who helped out with the gallery!!! We hope that you will continue to be involved with the CAC this year!!!!

And the biggest thanks goes out to our community, much of whom are continuously reminding us of what we mean to them! The City Art Center is operated by 100% Volunteers and it is our greatest reward to hear feedback and your supportive comments about what we are doing in the lovely City of Delaware! We hope to keep serving the Delaware area with interesting art exhibitions, platforms for conversations, art studio spaces, creative demonstrations, classes and workshops!

How this show is going to roll:
We are looking for unframed drawings & doodles because the idea is to fill the CAC with drawings that will be pinned to the walls
(Upon submission, the artists agree that their work may be pinned in the corners)
If you want your drawing to be labeled with your name. please print or sign the drawing (we are not making labels for each drawing)
We are hoping to cover every inch of wall space with drawings!

The upcoming exhibition for August in the works! Area Artist, Susan O'Connor, is preparing for her site specific installation " A History of Everything and Nothing" but needs your help! She needs materials: Your recycle-able paper products!!! Please Donate any clean paper products that could be used in her work. She will transform the remnants of your life and work into beautiful and thought-provoking three-dimensional forms for this show! See below examples of her previous work displayed at CAC back in April.

Also, Susan could use your help Monday - Thursday, Aug 1 -4 in the installation process. If you are available & interested in helping out, please email your availability and contact info to Jessi Walker: artcompartment@gmail.com or stop by the CAC to fill out our volunteer form.

The residents of this neighborhood will be setting out good-condition items in their lawn to give away for free to someone who could use them. Eliminate unused items from your home! Reduce landfill expansion! Get to know your neighbors! Save money! Note: there is a printable sign to stick out with your items to signal to others that the stuff is free for the taking! Speaking of Recycling!!! Our next exhibition " A History of Everything and Nothing" by Susan Li O'Connor will be opening Friday, August 5, 2011. Susan is collecting clean, paper/cardboard for recycling in her site-specific art installation. Please donate your paper-based recyclables to the CAC this month and you too can be a part of the "history" of this project! We will also need some volunteers to help out the first week of August with the installation. We are so excited about our upcoming exhibitions! In July, we are displaying work of artists who dabble in science as well as scientists who are experimenting with art! Science and Art have been having quite the dialogue for hundreds of years! We are happy to take part in that conversation with "Hello Science, Hello Art" which will be opening on Friday, July 1 and running through the end of the month. And don't miss the special multimedia performance by local artist, WHITE EXIT following the opening reception at 9pm. (More info about WHITE EXIT below)

In August, we are welcoming artist, Susan O'Connor as she creates a site-specific installation in our gallery space using all recycled materials. Susan is a faculty member at Columbus College of Art & Design and resides in Columbus, Ohio. She would like to collect your recycled paper packaging to use in this project. More information to come about that! We may need some volunteers the weekend of July 29 & 30 and some evenings through August 4 to help with that installation. This Saturday, April 16 from 2-4pm, the City Art Center is hosting a Paper-Making and Origami Extravaganza! Join us to learn Japanese folding techniques with beautiful paper or get involved with a hand-made paper project! These activities are available to the public in our studio area. ($5 materials donation is suggested)

Please Join us on Friday, April 29 for a gallery talk with several of the artists displaying work in the Something Else... exhibition. This talk will coincide with a potluck, feel free to bring your favorite dish, dessert, and/or beverage to share! This should prove to be a super swell time and hopefully the start of future events centered around exchange within the community.

Call For Artists!

For the Month of May, the City Art Center in Delaware, Ohio will be hosting a regional small works exhibition. The work must be 18” or smaller to be considered. (2-D & 3-D)

The exhibition opens First Friday, May 6 and runs until May 28. Significant exposure is expected with both the popular First Friday event as well as during the following weekend of the Delaware Arts Festival, which brings thousands of art patrons to the downtown area Saturday, May 14 and Sunday, May 15. All artwork must be for sale, the CAC ‘s commission is 40% on all sales.

Digital (jpeg) submissions should be sent to cityartcenter22@gmail.com for consideration no later than Thursday, April 28, 2011. Notification will occur by Monday, May 2. Drop-off will be Monday – Wednesday, May 4. Post in the Subject line: MAY ART SUBMISSION.

There is a non-refundable $20 entry fee for up to 3 works and $10 for each additional work (payable via PayPal or by check)

Please include in your submission: clear, color jpeg formatted images totaling less than 10MB, titles, dates, your name as it will appear on a label, the sizes, and price (with CAC 40% commission added).

Please note that we are currently looking for volunteers for the days of the Arts Festival (5/14 & 5/15). The $20 entry fee will be waived for all volunteers. We have a limited amount of volunteer positions and are accepting volunteer requests on a first come, first serve basis.

This group exhibition of regional artists highlights work that repurposes everyday objects and materials in their art. Something Else... is an investigation of context, association and furthermore is an exploration of the juncture in which art and life collide. We ask you to regard the process and result in which artists assign new meaning by applying a different context or arrangement to existing materials. This show encourages us to pause and consider how items in our daily lives could be reused or reinvented rather than contributing to the expanding landfills.

A Paper-Making Workshop is being developed in conjunction with this exhibition in the month of April...stay tuned, more information to come!

James Kreihbel is chair and full professor of fine arts at Ohio Wesleyan University where he teaches digital design and printmaking. For the last 15 years, he has been studying Anasazi (ancestral Puebloan) Indians. The art that he created from his visits to these ancient sites led to research in archeoastronomy, which he has been working on for the last three years in southeast Utah.
Monday, February 28, the Artist will give a talk about his work at the Delaware Artist Guild meeting in Room 121 of Edgar Hall. The meeting begins at 7:30pm and is open to the public.
In his illustrated presentation, Krehbiel will talk about his research in archaeoastronomy and his art. In some cases the art work helps to unravel the anthropological and scientific mysteries of remote Ancestral Puebloan sites. Yet at other times his experiences in the canyons inform the creation of the art work.

James Krehbiel will also give a gallery talk and guided tour
at the City Art Center on Thursday, March 24 at 6:30pm.

The Conversely Exhibition Opening Reception was last Friday (2/4/11). What a steady flow of First Friday go-ers!
The CAC would like to thank all of those who stopped by, but also to those who pitched in to get the show up and running in a short time (since the power-outage set us back a little).
We hope you will swing by and visit the CAC this month to see a very unique exhibition of regional artists working in an array of materials and media. The artists on display are all in some way, dealing with ideas surrounding about connecting, exchange, and collaboration. This is one of our main ideas at the CAC, we are hoping to create a place for exchanging ideas, working together, starting conversations, and making creative connections. The works in this exhibition are pushing our ideas about what art can be and how it intermingles with life. Participate in Upcoming Exhibition

The City Art Center invites your participation in an interactive exhibition.
Conversely
February 4 – 26, 2011,
Opening Reception is Friday, February 4 from 6 - 9pm

The show will be addressing concepts surrounding interaction, correspondence, and exchange with several different, experimental components. CAC is accepting submissions for artwork that reflects this idea of connectivity and also plans to be hosting an artist live via Skype from his studio. There are two portions of this show that individuals can easily become involved in as a participant regardless of their artistic experience or geographic location.

Part 1) CAC is requesting letters to be mailed to the art center that will be read on the opening night of the show. The content of the letters should address an individual, challenging them to perform a creative act. The action can be simple and should be appropriate for all ages as well as not harmful in any way. The letters will be available to the guests on opening night in hopes that your challenge will be attempted. Once the action has been completed, the letter will be displayed and become a part of the exhibition. The directions provided in the letter become a springboard for building interpretations, starting conversations, and enabling creative exchange, which is a central goal of the City Art Center.

Part 2) CAC challenges you to (A or B):
A. Mail in a photograph of what you consider to represent the idea of “stopping to smell the roses”, taking time to make an observation that improves quality of life.
B. Mail in a drawing of someone with whom you like to talk or someone with whom you would like to share a dialogue.

Note: Once received, the entries will become a part of the CAC archives and will not be returned. Entries will be shared at the discretion of the CAC exhibition committee and/or staff. You should indicate your location and tell us a little about yourself in the correspondence.
These entries can be mailed to the address below or delivered in person. There is no entry fee for Part 1 or Part 2. Individuals can participate in both parts as well submit artwork.

Nicole M. Gibbs Exhibition Installed and Open

Our current exhibition is new work by Nicole M. Gibbs.
Her drawings are created on both rice paper and newsprint using mostly with the moisture that the paper draws from ceramic clay placed on the paper and sometimes clay combined with ink and/or fabric dyes mixed in with the clay. Her interesting and experimental technique results in beautiful and unpredictable compositions that resemble something found on a microscopic slide.

A large, textured piece unexpectedly confronts the viewer in the space suspended from the ceiling and running the length of the 950 sq ft exhibition space. This piece was conceived of and created on-site during the installation week prior to the opening. Below are some photographs taken during that process.

The opening reception last night was a huge success! Thanks to everyone who came out despite the swirling snow and slushy roads! The installation of Nicole M. Gibbs is a sight to see, so if you did not make it out, please swing by today (Saturday) the gallery will be open from 2 - 7pm.

We are happy to announce a CALL FOR ENTRIES for our upcoming show.
The exhibition is a group show called: Conversely. February 4 – 26, 2011

Submissions should reflect how we interact, correspond, and engage with others. Ideally, the work should speak to how two people might connect or demonstrate a lack of connection. This exhibition is exploring concepts of reciprocation and exchange. A second component of the exhibition is a participatory element in which the CAC will accept letters with instructions for the guests to perform in the space from individuals from across the country. These performances will ensue at the opening reception on Friday, February 4, 2011, from 6 – 9 pm.
The CAC is accepting submissions in all mediums, however is currently limited in the ability to project. Applicants must provide their own equipment for displaying video or projection. Accepted entries must be ready to hang when dropped off at the center (see dates below).
There is an entry fee of $5 per 3 submissions (can be paid with PayPal: see below).

Deadline for Digital Submissions: Wednesday, January 26, 2011 Extended: Jan 28 (noon)
at midnight
Notification of Acceptance: Saturday, January 29
Drop-off of Work: Sunday, January 30, noon until 4pm
Tuesday, February 1, 2pm until 6pm.

Featured Artist: Nicole Gibbs
Nicole Gibbs was awarded the John Cavanaugh Sculpture Fellowship in 2007, and received her MFA from The Ohio State University in 2009. With degrees in painting, art history, ceramics, and sculpture, Gibbs' multi-disciplinary, experimental practice combines drawing and painting, clay, fibers, metal, and reused materials. She is a frequent collaborator, partnering with visual and performing artists, as well as community members.

More Progress!

We are so excited to share even more progress on the space! This past Saturday, we had a bunch of great volunteers that blew us away! We got so much more done that we had anticipated. We spent much of our time stripping out bad wiring and then everyone pitched in to work on chiseling away to expose the brick on the columns in the gallery area, as well as a few other things that needed to be done. It was quite messy, however we had a great time among friends and family! Thanks to everyone who pitched in to help us get a step closer to opening our doors!

Everyone knows that a Non-profit serves the community, but also needs help from the community from time to time, especially when just starting out. In order to get going, we have had a generous donation from a very special individual and dear friend, Emeritus Professor of Medicine, Ohio State University Stanley Balcerzak. Stan has been incredibly encouraging and helpful with this vision of enabling others to reach the creative inside.
We are currently looking into various grants available to organizations; however, this process can take some time. To get our doors open, we need several items such as drywall, plywood, screws, lots of paint, lighting, and floor sealer, etc (can provide a detailed list upon request). Also, we are building a new media computer center that will not only require working computers, desks, and chairs, but also the software in order to serve the community with creative programs.

An Angel...

An angel appeared and offered to help us with her super shop-vac! We can't thank Emily Calvert enough for her hard work in the space this week and motivating us to get in there and get this space underway! What a wonderful volunteer and incredible person!

Making Progress!

I'm happy to say that we are making progress with the space. We spent the afternoon yesterday doing some heavy cleaning. But, before I get to that, let's reflect on what's been happening up until now. The following images were taken shortly after we started clearing out the space back in August. We had some great help that day and filled 3 tractor trailer-sized dumpsters with stuff from the space. This space had previously been a florist shop for decades as I'm told and has been vacant for several years since their close. There was a lot to remove as we are opening the space to be used for exhibitions, instructional space, artist studios and a workshop.

The bottom image was taken as the major cleaning out was winding down. What a long, hot, filthy day!
We are currently in the process of planning the electrical reworking as there are many dangling wires in the space and much of the current electrical work falls quite short of the city code standards.

What's going on with the new Arts Center?

Everyone has been asking this question lately, so hopefully you will find some answers here. Keep checking in as I will try to keep updates posted regularly.

A little history: The Art Loft, located at 59 Sandusky Street closed its doors in July 2010. Phyllis and Suanne teamed up with another local artist, Jessi (me) and hatched a plan to expand the great things that were happening at the Art Loft and further the focus of serving the creative demands of our community in a non-profit arts center.
Forming a non-profit is not a simple task, but we are making headway! We are hoping to open our doors in the near future at 22 East Winter Street in Delaware next door to the new home of the Central Ohio Symphony Orchestra and The Strand Theater. The space needs a bit of work and thankfully, we have some fabulous board members and friends in the community that are pitching in to help out. And a special thanks to American ArtWorks Foundation for sponsoring our vision!

To inspire people through engaging art experiences which are diverse, accessible, and relevant both locally and globally.
